Renfield: Bloody Good Fun

Renfield is stuck in a toxic relationship. His boss sucks the life out of him, gaslights him, and makes him do his dirty work. Oh yeah, his boss is Dracula. I have to say, from the premise alone I was interested. A spin on a story as old as film itself, with Nicholas Cage as Dracula? Count me interested! Although it isn’t performing well at the box office, it was a very fun film. As mentioned, it’s a fun inversion of the story that’s older than you or me, and it actually tries to bring something new to the table. They play up the idea of Dracula and Renfield being in a toxic relationship, and it actually works very well. You can tell that it was what they wanted to spend time on the most, and it’s a well thought out plotline. It moves a little quicker than I expected, but on paper, it all works. Unfortunately, there’s a lesser subplot running at the same time that doesn’t feel as fleshed out. It has a good payoff, but when it’s introduced, it feels very clunky and awkward, leading to a very choppy tone. But, as weird as that one can be, the main stuff is what makes it worth the price of admission. Not to mention Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage completely owning up to the script, inherent goofiness or not. It’s a fun movie, and one that will definitely be a perfect watch around Halloween.
