I’m really going out of order with these Godzilla reviews, huh? Anyway, Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla follows the story of aliens invading the world with a robotic doppelganger of Godzilla himself, hoping to make him the ultimate weapon, while fulfilling a vision one woman had of the destruction of Japan. But an age old prophecy soon comes to pass, of two monsters rising to defend Japan in their time of need. I said this in the title and I’ll say it again, this installment is very 70’s, but that’s not a bad thing. It may not be the most flamboyant of that decade (that would belong to Godzilla Vs. Hedorah), but it has that charm to it, no doubt about it. The base story itself is a very simple one, and has plenty of elements that the series up to that point was no stranger to, yet it takes these elements and plays with them to deliver an entertaining time. There’s a lot of memorable moments in this entry that still stand out nearly 50 years later, but the biggest of them all goes to the reveal of the titular monster, Mechagodzilla. Everything from the score to the design of the bionic monster is, as stated, 70’s as hell, but in the greatest way possible. As fun as the Japanese version of the film is, some of the behind the scenes of the American version is just as interesting as well, and if you check this movie out, I do recommend that you look into the history of it. On that topic, this one is an easy recommend. Light on the mind but heavy on the entertainment factor, it delivers a full and complete narrative, with some classic monster showdowns, and one total banger of a soundtrack.
