One hour head start. Excommunicado. 14 million dollars for his head. Every assassin hunting him. John Wick is facing impossible odds, seeking to clear his name, and live his life. John Wick: Chapter 3- Parabellum is, more or less, a big 2 hour action sequence that the franchise has more than earned. Much like the first two films, this one has action sequences that feel like they were crafted by God, and implemented into the story as naturally as you and I draw breath. It’s effortlessly entertaining, but also has it’s hands full this time around with a hefty amount of world building. With this installment, the writers seek to fully flesh out the world that the story is set in. Outside of John Wick himself, they build up the rules and groups that are either helping John or looking for his head. And, believe it or not, it’s able to convey what it wants to in a very accessible way. There’s a lot of details to it, but the ones you need to understand the story are easy to grasp, but when you think about it more, it feels like a puzzle that begins to piece itself together. It lends itself to a very satisfying experience. One of the truly amazing things about not only this film, but this series as a whole, is how easily they can sell us on the character of John. So many action movie stars fall flat on their face, because they’re so preoccupied with telling us that the protagonist is a badass rather than show us that they’re a badass. With John, they don’t waste any time telling us: they just show us. They could easily say that he just makes a six shooter from scratch, and it would be no more than a throwaway line that wouldn’t change anything, being included or not. But when the film takes the time to show us John making a six shooter from scratch, and draws out the tension for the time it takes while being chased, it makes it easy to buy that, yes, John Wick is a badass. The movies have gotten better and better as they go, and with how the fourth is being received by fans and critics, it’s safe to say that John Wick will be sticking around for some time to come.
