In the wake of a recent Godzilla attack, the Japanese Self Defense Force commissions the creation of a cyborg to combat the giant monster threat. Taking the bones of the original Godzilla and building a mechanical body around it, they hope to use it to destroy Godzilla once and for all. But an unexpected snag in their development leads to a chilling discovery, control of the cyborg leaps out of their hands, and into that of fate, with the future of Japan on the line. Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla is the height of the Godzilla series when it comes to monster action. It’s never been at the peak that it reached here. They reinvented Mechagodzilla for the third time, and they gave him such a new spin on it that the film is worth it for that idea alone. But on top of that, you have truly amazing characters; A scientist, his daughter, and a training Mechagodzilla pilot. They make a really nice group of characters, bouncing off each other in very human ways, and learning from one other. The soundtrack as well may be another series best. Composer Ōshima gives Godzilla a new theme for this outing, and fires on all cylinders with her work. I have this score on my phone, and I listen to it almost all the time. But, what makes this movie special to me, is Mechagodzilla. I LOVE Mechagodzilla. As long as I’ve been a G-fan, I’ve been as big a fan of Mechagodzilla. And he is at his best here. As mentioned, they take the bones of the first Godzilla and use that as a base, and that gives him a whole personality. I refuse to elaborate on how, because that is a big spoiler for the film. Never the less, I absolutely recommend this one. Good story, good action, and raises some interesting ethical questions, which are only elaborated on even more in the sequel. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
