Coming back for another adventure in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, it’s only fitting to go back and revisit where it all started for Scott Lang. Amidst a troubled production and swapping directors, Marvel’s smallest hero finally made his debut back in 2015, to a fairly warm welcome at that. The man who never ages, Paul Rudd, plays Scott Lang, recently released from prison on charges of burglary. Michael Douglas plays Hank Pym, a scientist who’s responsible for many breakthroughs in his field, is in need of a burglar. Once he catches wind of Lang, he recruits him to help him and his daughter, played by Evangeline Lilly, to stop Pym’s own protégé from taking over his company. Living up to the name, Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man is really a small scale adventure, and was the first of it’s kind amidst the Marvel Cinematic Universe; bear in mind as well, this was still before Thanos had those pesky rocks, and even before the MCU made it out of it’s own declared Phase Two. With the screenplay revolving around a heist, it doesn’t have to beat around the bush with it’s goals, but it doesn’t waste that time either. Since Ant-Man’s gimmick is that he can shrink to the size of an ant, thanks to the designs of Hank Pym, the film gives some time to enjoying the technology. It felt like the writers were playing with it, just like a kid could play with something like Lego’s, and that fun lends itself to the audiences’ own enjoyment. Yet, as fun as the movie can be, it doesn’t save itself from flaws. Most MCU entries seem to suffer from their villain’s ranging from lacking to just downright bad, and this outing falls right into that range. Corey Stoll chews the scenery, and the gimmicks of the story calls for some entertaining set pieces, but the writing on him lacks. He’s just a typical villain, with nothing to set him apart from the rest. Going back to big picture, Ant-Man really works on a small level, with such fun performances, and well established low stakes, that you really can’t go wrong with it, either on first watch or re-watch.
